Ian Wright

After graduating from the University of Cambridge, Ian spent 5 years in private practice before returning as a lecturer in equine surgery in 1984. After 5 years, including a sabbatical appointment as Visiting Professor of Equine Surgery at the University of Florida, Ian moved to the Animal Health trust as senior surgeon and head of the equine unit obtaining the Diploma in Equine Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1991 and becoming a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgery in 1993. He joined Newmarket Equine Hospital as a consultant in 1996. To date, he has made over 170 national and international scientific presentations and taught post-graduate courses in surgery, arthroscopy, internal fixation, radiology and diagnostic techniques; these include arthroscopic courses at basic, advanced and specialist levels annually from 1994 to date. Ian was awarded the Equine Veterinary Journal Clinical Award in 1994 and 1999 and Open award in 2013. He has also written 6 book chapters, edited 1 text book and co-authored the 3rd and 4th editions of Diagnostic and Surgical Arthroscopy in the Horse. He has been consultant surgeon for a number of Four Star three day events and International race meetings in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Dubai and for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Ian’s principal clinical interests are in arthroscopic surgery and fracture repair. His operating log has averaged 459 surgeries per annum over the last 10 years and 534 surgeries per annum over the last 5 years. He was elected to Honorary Fellowship of the RCVS in 2016 for his contribution to equine surgery.
