Practical Surgical Techniques of the Head and Neck

This course will cover the most common surgical procedures performed on the head and neck in ageneral practice. After this course, the participants will have a better understanding of the pathologiesinducing upper airway obstruction in dogs and cats. Emergency treatment of an upper airwayobstruction with a temporary tracheostomy will be presented. The different types of salivary mucocelewill be explained and their surgical treatment illustrated with several surgical cases. The importantanatomical landmarks important for a successful surgical outcome will be presented. Naso-trachealintubation, retropharyngeal intubation and using scope to intubate and perform an oral exam will becovered by the anesthesia team.The different surgical options for the treatment of otitis externa and media will be illustrated. Thebenefit of an early lateral ear resection associated to a ventral bulla osteotomy will be explained toimprove the medical treatment of otitis external and avoid a total ear canal ablation. Total ear canalablation will also be performed in the practical session.
