Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use new techniques and understanding of canine gait to better detect subtle lameness in both the stance- and swing-phases of the gait cycle.
  • Recognize some of the classic causes of non-painful, swing-phase lameness patterns in dogs.
  • Efficiently perform a Canine Orthopedic Pain Screening Exam.
  • Effectively perform a Comprehensive Canine Orthopedic Exam.
  • Describe why pain is one of the most important localizers of lameness and demonstrate gentle handling techniques combined with palpation skills to detect subtle pain.
  • Distinguish cranial- from caudal-cruciate ligament rupture & explain why it is so important.
  • Identify hip luxation, demonstrate closed hip reduction, and describe how the exam findings and post-reduction coaptation differs for dorsal- versus ventral-hip luxation.
