Course Description

You’ve been trained in TPLO, and you’ve gained some experience in treating selected cases. Now you are realizing that you’d like to feel more comfortable in many of the finer nuances of this complex procedure. When we train our surgical residents, we challenge them first to simply learn to perform the steps TPLO, but as they progress through their training, we encourage them to grow from basic competence to performing TPLO with elegant excellence and expertise. If that pursuit of excellence gets your blood pumping, we invite you to attend this TPLO 201 course that is designed to refine and grow your skills dedicated to the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament disease.

In this course, you’ll enjoy 1 hour of online learning (in small bite-sized morsels) at your own pace and in your place as you prepare for your more intensive in-person/hands-on training.  You will grow your confidence, elegance, and expertise as you refine your approach to:

  • Preoperative radiographic planning
  • Precise & accurate transfer of your radiographic plan to your patient
  • Consistent & accurate execution of the osteotomy, plateau rotation, and TPLO plate & screw placement
  • Thorough and precise meniscal assessment and treatment
  • Addition of a supplemental extracapsular suture (Arthrex Internal Brace) to constrain residual instability that may persist following TPLO in some of your patients

You’ll to return to your practice equipped with new insights and the nuanced surgical skills that will make you a better surgeon when performing TPLO on your patients.

This course is designed for: TPLO-trained and -experienced primary care veterinarians and veterinary surgeons seeking to refine their surgical techniques adding precision and accuracy to their surgical planning and execution. In addition, you will learn to safely add an extracapsular suture to manage residual instability that can persist after TPLO.

You are welcome (though not required) to bring one of your vet technicians with you to this course. Register your veterinary technician here.

Dr. Kevin McAbee

Dr. Kevin McAbee is owner and mobile surgeon of Spire Veterinary Surgery in Fort Collins, CO. After graduating Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo, he attended Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, earning his DVM in 1999. He completed his residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York and became board-certified in small animal surgery in 2006. His clinical interests include orthopedic, neurologic, and oncology surgery.
Mark C. Rochat

Dr. Mark C. Rochat

DVM, MS, DACVS

Dr. Rochat graduated from Mississippi State University in 1986 and completed a residency at the University of Missouri in 1991.  After a year in a surgical referral practice and attaining board certification, he accepted a position at Oklahoma State University, rising to the rank of Professor and Section Chief.  In 2015, he moved to Purdue University where he now serves a Clinical Professor of Orthopedics and Chief of Small Animal Surgery. He has authored over 140 publications and given over 300 presentations.  His professional interests include trauma, external skeletal fixation, fracture management, arthroscopy, wound management, reconstructive surgery, and total hip and knee replacement.

Dr. David Hummel

Dr. David Hummel is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He received a BS in Biology from Virginia Tech and a DVM degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Hummel completed a rotating internship at Oradell Animal Hospital in New Jersey, as well as a surgical residency at the University of Illinois. Following his residency, Dr. Hummel returned to the East Coast, where he worked as a staff surgeon at the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center in Richmond, Virginia before joining Skylos Sports Medicine/BluePearl. Dr. Hummel has a passion for arthroscopy and minimally invasive orthopedic surgery. He has published several peer-reviewed research articles on topics including total hip replacement, management of long bone fractures and cranial cruciate ligament injury and stifle stabilization. Dr. Hummel is a surgical consultant for the Veterinary Information Network, the largest web-based information service for veterinarians worldwide. Dr. Hummel is also active as a mentor for veterinary students at the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Hummel thrives on the relationships he forms with his clients and patients and strives to provide the very best care to each patient, and clear communication with every client. Dr. Hummel’s wife Katie is also a veterinarian. They have two children, two dogs, and one cat. When not spending time with his family, Dr. Hummel enjoys fishing, gardening, and woodworking.

Dr. Laura E. Peycke

DVM, MS, DACVS-SA

Dr. Laura E Peycke is a Clinical Professor of surgery at TAMU College of Veterinary Medicine.  She received her DVM from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1998.  Dr. Peycke completed a small animal surgical residency from Louisiana State University and received her American College of Veterinary Surgeons board certification in 2004.  Dr. Peycke joined the Department of Small Animal Clinical Science at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004.  Dr. Peycke was hired as a clinical track professor and provides senior clinician support of  the orthopedic, soft tissue and general surgery services and teaches veterinary students in these respective disciplines.  Dr. Peycke's focus is primarily clinical teaching and clinical service; however, she has been involved in leadership and committee positions in teaching and is involved in continuing education outside of the hospital.  Dr. Peycke also received a second specialty board certification from the American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2013.  She presently serves as a faculty advisor and as ACVS program director for the small animal surgical residency program at TAMU.

Participant Cancellation Policy: Course attendees can cancel their registration for an in-person course according to the following

  • Cancellation more than 60 days prior: Full refund or 100% Future Transfer Credit (FTC).
  • Cancellation 30-60 days prior: 50% refund or 75% FTC.
  • Cancellations within 30 days: 50% FTC only. Cancellations due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Future Transfer Credits can be applied to any course within 365 days of the cancelled course.

Course Cancellation Policy: Course cancellations due to low registration numbers or other circumstances may be announced 35 days or more prior to the course. Full refund of the course registration or 100% Future Transfer Credit (FTC) will apply. We are unable to reimburse for travel expenses incurred.
