This course will focus on basic abdominal surgical procedures performed in general practice. A strong emphasis will be placed on basic surgical principles related to gastrointestinal surgery and urinary surgery. This course includes 5 hours of lecture and 11 hours of hands-on training in lab using canine cadavers and fresh intestinal samples. During the fresh intestinal lab, detailed RNA, enterotomy and enterectomy techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. During the cadaver labs basic gastrointestinal surgery (gastrotomy, gastrectomy, gastropexy, enterotomy, enterectomy), cystotomy, partial cystectomy, urethrostomy and splenectomy will be demonstrated by instructors and then performed by participants. At the end of this course participants will be comfortable performing the techniques mentioned above.

Dr. Eric Monnet graduated from veterinary school in Maisons Alfort, France in 1985.  He worked for four years in a Paris private practice performing small animal medicine and surgery.  In 1994, Dr. Monnet completed a small animal surgery residency at Colorado State University and concurrently finished a Master of Sciences degree.  In 1997, Dr. Monnet received his PhD in Clinical Sciences studying cardiac efficiency in dogs. In 2003, he became a fellow of the American Heart Association.  In 2017, he became a founding fellow the ACVS MIS Small Animal fellowship. Dr. Monnet is currently a professor in small animal surgery (General Surgery at Colorado State University.  He has authored more than 100 articles and 25 chapters in various surgical textbooks.  Dr. Monnet was the founding president in 2001-2003 of the Society for Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery and in 2002-2004 of the Veterinary Endoscopy Society.  He is the editor of the textbook: “Disease Mechanisms in Small Animal Surgery” (3rd edition).  He is also the editor of the textbook “Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery” (1st edition), the textbook “Small Animal Thoracic Surgery” (2nd edition), and the textbook “Gastrointestinal Surgical Techniques” (1st edition).

Dr. Giovanni Tremolada

Dr. Tremolada is a clinical assistant professor of surgical oncology at Colorado State University. He received his DVM from the University of Milan and completed a PhD program at the same institution. He started a combined residency and Master of Science in small animal surgery at Colorado State University and subsequently completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the Flint Animal Cancer Center. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2019 and an ACVS Fellow in surgical oncology in 2020. Since 2022 he is also a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Participant Cancellation Policy: Course attendees can cancel their registration for an in-person course according to the following

  • Cancellation more than 60 days prior: Full refund minus 10% processing fee or 100% Future Transfer Credit (FTC).
  • Cancellation 30-60 days prior: 50% refund or 75% FTC.
  • Cancellations within 30 days: 50% FTC only. Cancellations due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Future Transfer Credits can be applied to any course within 365 days of the cancelled course.

Course Cancellation Policy: Course cancellations due to low registration numbers or other circumstances may be announced 35 days or more prior to the course. Full refund of the course registration or 100% Future Transfer Credit (FTC) will apply. We are unable to reimburse for travel expenses incurred.
