We get it … you see plenty of dogs with patellar luxation and referral to a specialist is a great answer for many of them. But we all know that barriers to referral exist for some clients. At the end of the day, you want to take great care of your valued clients … when does it make sense for YOU to offer corrective surgery and when is that a not a good idea? Just the thought of determining if your patient truly needs a trochleoplasty or a tibial tuberosity transposition (TTT) is daunting … much less performing these techniques with skill and confident assurance.

In this specially designed hybrid-format course, online learning modules will prepare you for your intensive (and fun) hands-on training at the CSUVetCE center. You’ll enjoy the anywhere / anytime freedom of small “bite sized” online learning modules that allow you to learn at your own pace and in your own place. You’ll learn valuable tips on diagnosis, case selection, intraoperative decision-making, and more in preparation for your immersive hands-on training experience in which you’ll be supported by friendly instructors that have trained 100’s (if not 1000’s) of veterinarians like you.

You’ll return to your practice with a whole new understanding of patellar luxation and the surgical skills needed for treatment. You’ll be eager to offer treatment when it makes sense and you’ll be wise enough to avoid those cases for which the predicted outcome is sketchy.

Instructors

Dr. Ross H. Palmer

DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS

Dr. Palmer, a native of Kansas, received his BS and DVM degrees from Kansas State University. He completed an internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. He received his small animal surgical residency training and an MS degree (Physiology) from the University of Georgia. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. His veterinary career has spanned both academics (Texas A&M and Colorado State University) and private specialty practice (Silicon Valley/Monterey Bay region of California) as a staff surgeon and as a practice owner. Ross is currently a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Colorado State University and the Associate Director of Education at the Translational Medicine Institute. Dr. Palmer seeks to entertain as he educates in order to make learning an enjoyable and memorable experience. He has been an invited speaker at conferences throughout the USA and the world. He was recently named VMX Speaker of the Year. He is the founder of the Complete Course on External Skeletal Fixation educating veterinarians from around the world for 25 years. He’s authored > 50 journal articles and book chapters. He is past President of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society (VOS), editorial board member of Today’s Veterinary Practice, board member of the VOS, World Veterinary Orthopaedic Congress, North American Veterinary Conference and the Veterinary Surgery Journal. Ross’ personal passions include international travel, cycling, hiking, fishing, and relaxing with his family in their family’s “off the grid” island cabin in remote northwestern Ontario, Canada

Dr. Jess Barrera

DVM, DACVS, ACVS Fellow Surgical Oncology

Originally from western Montana, Dr. Barrera received her undergraduate degree from University of Miami, and DVM from Colorado State University in 2006. She then completed a rotating internship at Animal Surgical and Emergency Center in Los Angeles, CA, followed by a surgical internship at Oregon State University. Dr. Barrera then returned to Colorado State University to complete a residency in small animal surgery, followed by a one-year fellowship in Surgical Oncology at Colorado State University’s Animal Cancer Center. Dr. Barrera has presented and published articles in the areas of endocrine and minimally-invasive surgery, and loves showing how fun surgery can be to general practitioners, lecturing at conferences and teaching surgery CE laboratories multiple times a year. Dr. Barrera enjoys all aspects of small animal surgery, with particular interests being surgical oncology, soft tissue and orthopedic minimally-invasive surgery, and endocrine surgery. Outside of veterinary medicine (and most importantly!), Dr. Barrera enjoys travel, road trips in her camper van Huckleberry, climbing Colorado’s 14ers, backpacking, cooking, mountain biking, reading, and spending time with her husband John, daughter Rylee, cat Mango, and mountain mutt Lucy Goose.

Dr. Kristin Coleman

Dr. Coleman graduated with the Biomedical Sciences Dean’s Medal and earned her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Auburn University in 2008. She continued her education at Auburn University, where she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2012, along with the Small Animal Surgery Proficiency Award. Following veterinary school, Dr. Coleman completed a rotating internship in medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan in 2013. She then pursued a combined Small Animal Surgery residency and Master of Science degree at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins. In 2016, Dr. Coleman joined a busy private practice in Brooklyn, New York, and a few months later, she became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS-SA). Since relocating in early 2019 to GCVS, Dr. Coleman has happily worked as a surgeon and enjoys orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, MIS, and any procedure involving exotics, which has led to her position as liaison to the Houston Zoo. Her textbook, Techniques in Small Animal Soft Tissue, Orthopedic, and Ophthalmic Surgery, which was created in collaboration with over 30 other specialists, was published electronically in the Summer of 2024 and printed in the Fall of 2024. In her spare time, she loves traveling, especially when it involves teaching about or performing surgery, running, and spending time with her 3 cats and tiny brown dog.

Participant Cancellation Policy: Course attendees can cancel their registration for an in-person course according to the following

Cancellation more than 60 days prior: Full refund or 100% Future Transfer Credit (FTC).
Cancellation 30-60 days prior: 50% refund or 75% FTC.
Cancellations within 30 days: 50% FTC only. Cancellations due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances will be considered on an individual basis.
Future Transfer Credits can be applied to any course within 365 days of the cancelled course.

Course Cancellation Policy: Course cancellations due to low registration numbers or other circumstances may be announced 35 days or more prior to the course. Full refund of the course registration or 100% Future Transfer Credit (FTC) will apply. We are unable to reimburse for travel expenses incurred.
