Course Description

This course will provide an in-depth review of currently available and emerging interventions for mitral regurgitation in dogs by leading experts on these procedures.  Emphasis will be on indications, echocardiographic evaluation, case selection and candidacy, expected outcomes, and post-procedural management.

Dr. Chris Orton

Dr. Chris Orton

Dr. Orton received a DVM from Washington State University. He completed residency training in small animal surgery at Ohio State University, a NIH research fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and a PhD from Colorado State University. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Orton established the clinical cardiology service at Colorado State University and began a heart surgery program for small animals in 1991. This program is credited with firsts in canine open-heart surgery and is recognized as a leading center for small animal cardiac surgery and interventions. Dr. Orton’s current research interests are in the areas of pathobiology of valvular heart disease and development of next generation interventions for valvular heart disease. He is an Honorary Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) and serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology.
Brianna Potter

Dr. Brianna Potter

Brianna Potter completed a cardiology residency and two-year interventional cardiac fellowship at Colorado State University. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in Cardiology and is currently an Assistant Professor at Colorado State University. Her interests include interventional therapies for congenital and acquired heart disease and advanced imaging.

Dr. Scansen is originally from Snohomish, Washington. He was on the faculty of the Ohio State University before moving to Colorado State University where he is currently Professor and Service Head of the Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery Section. His clinical and research interests include congenital heart disease, advanced cardiac imaging with a particular emphasis on cardiac CT, and optimizing techniques for the minimally-invasive, transcatheter treatment of structural heart disease.
John Bonagura

John Bonagura is a graduate of the Ohio State University. He completed a rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center and residencies/board certifications in Cardiology and Internal Medicine at OSU. He is a also a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography. Dr. Bonagura was head of Cardiology & Interventional Medicine at Ohio State for most of his career (currently: Professor Emeritus). John was visiting research fellow at Edinburgh University, Scotland, and he later held the Gilbreath-McLorn Endowed Professor of Cardiology at the University of Missouri. He rejoined the faculty at OSU in 2001. Since 2019, he has been affiliated with North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and is presently Adjunct Professor of Cardiology at Colorado State University CVM. John is the long-time Editor of Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy and co-author of the Colour Atlas of Veterinary Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diseases in Companion Animals. He has co-authored over 300 scientific publications and book chapters. John served as President of the ACVIM specialty of Cardiology and on editorial boards for the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology,  American Society of Echocardiography CASE, and Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Bonagura is recipient of multiple teaching awards including the Ohio State University campus Award for Distinguished Teaching. Other honors include the Bourgelat award (BSAVA), Kirk Lifetime Achievement Award (ACVIM), Doctor Honoris Causa (Autonomous University of Barcelona), Honorary Doctorate (University of Zurich), Faculty Achievement Award (AAVC), and distinguished Alumnus awards from the Animal Medical Center and OSU College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Justin Allen

Dr. Justin Allen

Dr. Justin Allen grew up on a farm in central Illinois. After graduating from the University of Illinois, he traveled to Los Angeles, California for an internship program at Advanced Veterinary Care Center; he then moved to California Animal Hospital in Los Angeles for a 3-year private practice residency program in Cardiology. He received board-certification in 2010 and after practicing in Chicago and Northern California, he and his family moved to Los Angeles to join VCA West Los Angeles in 2016. His particular interests in cardiology include interventional therapy of structural heart diseases and emergency therapy of heart failure/arrhythmias. He and his wife Kimberly share a love of food, and have been enjoying the wide variety of incredible food in the LA area. They currently live in an extremely busy household in Rancho Palos Verdes with a doodle puppy (Curry), two boys (Nathan, 10 y, and Evan, 7 y), and one girl (Audrey, 4 y).
Dr. Shiori Arai

Dr. Shiori Arai

Dr. Arai is a board-certified veterinary surgeon who serves the cardiac surgery program at Colorado State University. Her primary research interests are in degenerative mitral valve disease, congenital heart disease including tricuspid valve dysplasia, and cardiac fibrosis.

Dr. Katsuhiro Matsuura

Dr. Matsuura is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Open-Heart Surgery at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine He graduated from Rakuno Gakuen University (Hokkaido, Japan) in 2013. Katsuhiro found an interest in cardiology in his first year at work. He worked hard on clinical work and research with his love for animals. His efforts contributed to obtaining a PhD, being certified as a board certified member of Japanese veterinary cardiology society, and becoming the youngest mitral valve surgeon with practicable results.   • Cancellation more than 60 days prior: Full refund or 100% Future Transfer Credit (FTC).
  • Cancellation 30-60 days prior: 50% refund or 75% FTC.
  • Cancellations within 30 days: 50% FTC only. Cancellations due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Future Transfer Credits can be applied to any course within 365 days of the cancelled course.

Course Cancellation Policy: Course cancellations due to low registration numbers or other circumstances may be announced 35 days or more prior to the course. Full refund of the course registration or 100% Future Transfer Credit (FTC) will apply. We are unable to reimburse for travel expenses incurred.
