This hybrid course combines comprehensive lectures and extensive, practical hands-on lab training using plastic bone models and cadavers to teach you reliable techniques for stabilizing simple and comminuted long bone diaphyseal fractures.

Postoperative radiographs will be made to evaluate and discuss your repair technique with our helpful and supportive orthopedic experts. New implant designs and practical tips from our expert faculty will make your fracture management simpler than ever before. Discussions on clinical cases will put everything into context, and review of postoperative care and strategies to reduce complications will build your confidence in deciding future patient cases.

Dr. Ross H. Palmer

DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS

Dr. Palmer, a native of Kansas, received his BS and DVM degrees from Kansas State University. He completed an internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. He received his small animal surgical residency training and an MS degree (Physiology) from the University of Georgia. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. His veterinary career has spanned both academics (Texas A&M and Colorado State University) and private specialty practice (Silicon Valley/Monterey Bay region of California) as a staff surgeon and as a practice owner. Ross is currently a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Colorado State University and the Associate Director of Education at the Translational Medicine Institute. Dr. Palmer seeks to entertain as he educates in order to make learning an enjoyable and memorable experience. He has been an invited speaker at conferences throughout the USA and the world. He was recently named VMX Speaker of the Year.  He is the founder of the Complete Course on External Skeletal Fixation educating veterinarians from around the world for 25 years. He’s authored > 50 journal articles and book chapters. He is past President of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society (VOS), editorial board member of Today’s Veterinary Practice, board member of the VOS, World Veterinary Orthopaedic Congress, North American Veterinary Conference and the Veterinary Surgery Journal. Ross’ personal passions include international travel, cycling, hiking, fishing, and relaxing with his family in their family’s “off the grid” island cabin in remote northwestern Ontario, Canada
Jason Bleedorn

Dr. Jason Bleedorn

DVM, MS, DACVS-SA

Dr. Bleedorn’s educational background includes DVM (the University of Illinois) in 2005, intern (Purdue University) in 2006, surgical intern (Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center) in 2007, and surgery residency (the University of Wisconsin-Madison) in 2010. He completed a master of science degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015 with a project focused on the investigation of mechanically induced signaling events involved in bone adaptation. Dr. Bleedorn is currently a clinical associate professor in small animal orthopedics at Colorado State University. He provided clinical service in orthopedics at the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Care; instructed residents, interns, and DVM students; and conducts clinical research within the Comparative Orthopaedic Research Laboratory. Dr. Bleedorn’s research interests comprise several clinical, translational, and educational topics. These include imaging assessment and treatment of bone deformities, 3D printing for surgical planning, biomechanics and augmentation of fracture healing, limb salvage of bone tumors, and mechanisms of cruciate ligament disease in dogs. His educational interests include the development of instructional tools and assessment metrics for surgical training, resident recruitment, and clinic efficiency.
Russell Fugazzi

Dr. Russell Fugazzi

Dr. Fugazzi is a veterinary surgeon at Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center. His formal education began at Texas A&M University studying Biomechanical Engineering and the development of artificial heart valves. Veterinary school followed soon thereafter; after graduating in 1999 with a mixed animal and exotic DVM degree, he practiced general medicine and surgery at different small animal practices in Southern Oregon and Colorado. After ten years of general practice, he was fortunate enough to gain a surgical internship at a private specialty hospital in Loveland, Colorado then a surgical residency at Washington State University. Studying both small animal orthopedics and soft tissue surgery he found a particular interest in orthopedics and minimally invasive surgery such as arthroscopy and laparoscopy. He spent the past 3 years developing his skills in Calgary, Alberta (Canada) while growing a small family before he moved back to the Rogue Valley.

Dr. Laura Peycke

DVM, MS, DACVS-SA

Dr. Laura Peycke is a Clinical Professor of surgery at TAMU College of Veterinary Medicine.  She received her DVM from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1998.  Dr. Peycke completed a small animal surgical residency from Louisiana State University and received her American College of Veterinary Surgeons board certification in 2004.  Dr. Peycke joined the Department of Small Animal Clinical Science at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004.  Dr. Peycke was hired as a clinical track professor and provides senior clinician support of  the orthopedic, soft tissue and general surgery services and teaches veterinary students in these respective disciplines.  Dr. Peycke's focus is primarily clinical teaching and clinical service; however, she has been involved in leadership and committee positions in teaching and is involved in continuing education outside of the hospital.  Dr. Peycke also received a second specialty board certification from the American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2013.  She presently serves as a faculty advisor and as ACVS program director for the small animal surgical residency program at TAMU.

  • Cancellations within 30 days: 50% FTC only. Cancellations due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Future Transfer Credits can be applied to any course within 365 days of the cancelled course.
